Numbers not adding up

Some food for thought

"Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils."

—Hector Berlioz (French composer, 1803-1869)

Word for the day

Cyclopean (adj)

Gigantic; vast.

First random thought this morning
The thing that I have enjoyed most in the recent past is watching the Indian athletes performing in the recently concluded Asian Games in Jakarta.
Watching these young people perform was a totally cleansing experience. They detoxified the mind that was filled with negativity spread all around - office, club, TV, newspapers, social media everywhere. Watching them proudly holding the Tricolor with tears of joy tucked in a corner of gleaming eyes, wearing a shy smile on face and child like innocent eagerness to show their medals and tell their story was incredible feeling.
These young people, who appeared to have come from nowhere, were performing to the best of their capabilities giving tough competition to the best in Asia (the World in many cases), with almost no complaints. All of them appeared quintessential Indians - unassuming, unpretentious and almost inconspicuous. While some of the celebrity athletes could not meet expectations, many unknown faces were seen standing on the pedestal.
These young people strengthened the hope that despite all the moaning about negativity, hatred, violence nauseating political narrative and administrative apathy, not much is lost. And whatever is lost could be retrieved with some effort.
Reading about the socio-economic background of these people was even more assuring. Regardless of all grouses of nepotism, corruption, lack of meritocracy due to reservation etc., I felt that lot of things must be working well for these promising young men and women.
Two more things that struck my mind are also noteworthy.
(a)   I could not find any athlete from the families of those who demean India for not performing well in international events; or those who claim to be running charities for supporting poor athletes.
(b)   The Indian men hockey team was as aggressive (almost rowdy) on the field, like any other European or South East Asian team. The men in blue are no longer bunnies who will bear aggression of opponents with smiles and mild frowns.
Chart that caught my attention yesterday

Numbers not adding up

NSE500 index represents almost 96% of the NSE market capitalization.
I made some observations during a cursory analysis of aggregate financial statements of NSE500 companies.  I would like to highlight the following three observations for your view/comments.
